Judd Family Highlights


John Lowe Butler 1808-1860
  • suffered from rheumatism as a child
  • Unhappy that he was christened Methodist (not baptized by immersion), Baptized by immersion into the baptist church although he disagreed with predestination doctrine, Converted to Mormonism in 1835 despite persecution from his friends and family
  • Spared from mob violence by following Joseph Smith's counsel to leave his home & not stay 1 more night following voting violence
  • Served mission to the Sioux Indians

George Washington Sevey, Jr. 1832-1902

  • had a twin sister
  • While heading to the gold rush in California, he became ill, was "stranded" in Utah and converted to Mormonism.  "A miracle converted me," confessed Bishop Sevy in one of his rare sermon ventures, "but it has not taken a miracle to keep me converted. The testimony it left with me is my choicest possession and burns ever brighter as the days pass."
  • Married 3 wives and had 30 children
  • Hole in the Rock Expedition "MARKER at HOBBS WASH READS . . .:Four men were sent out as an advanced scouting party to locate a route across this impossible terrain to Montezuma Creek. George Hobbs, George Sevey, George Morrel, Lemuel H. Redd, Sr., were camped on this spot the night of Dec. 27, 1879. Having been lost in the snow storm and without food for 4 days, George Hobbs carved his name and the date on the sheltered canyon walls, thinking they would never get out alive. They were successful, however, and the main company of pioneers settled Bluff April 6, 1880."
  • Kumen Jones had this to say about him: "George Sevy was a man of sterling qualities about 40 years of age at this time of indomitable courage. Sturdy, honest, fair, in all his dealings, with men accustomed to hard work together with about all the qualities for an ideal pioneer. 
  • Settled in Spanish Fork, New Harmony and Panguitch areas
  • Bishop in Spanish Fork and later 1st bishop of Colonia Juarez, Mexico

Phoebe Melinda Butler 1838-1892

  •  traveled west to Utah at age 14
  • Met her husband, George Washington Sevy at a dance
  • Mother of 14 children including 2 sets of twins
  • Contracted cholera and died suddenly while her husband was away in Mexico

Emily & 3 children - Francis, Hertha & James

Emily Judd 1888-1928 & husband Francis Henrie

  • had a childhood sickness that left her with saint vitus' dance, a disorder of the nervous system
  • mother of 11 children
  • sociable, happy disposition
  • paralyzed on one side of her body for more than a year from a stroke
  • she died at age 40 while receiving treatments to help her paralysis
